SATA Group Marks Its 85th Anniversary with Commemorative Initiatives, Promotional Campaigns and Passenger-Focused Activities
An exhibition across all airports in the Autonomous Region of the Azores and a range of promotional fare campaigns are among the initiatives marking the 85th anniversary of the SATA Group, celebrated on 21 August. On this date, in 1941, the Sociedade Açoreana de Estudos Aéreos (Azorean Society for Aeronautical Studies) was established, laying the foundations for what would later become SATA and beginning a journey closely intertwined with the history of aviation in the Azores.
Over more than eight decades, the vision of the Group’s founders has evolved into a daily mission: connecting the islands to one another, bringing the Azores closer to the outside world, and helping to overcome insularity by ensuring mobility for the Azorean population and strengthening the archipelago’s links with external markets and communities.
To mark this historic milestone, the companies within the SATA Group have prepared a series of initiatives designed to honor and preserve this shared legacy, while extending the celebrations through activities aimed at travel enthusiasts and the passengers who continue to choose SATA Air Açores and Azores Airlines for their journeys.
Earlier this month, the Group’s airlines launched a programme of commercial initiatives specially created for this anniversary. These include the Child Fare Campaign, introduced on 1 August, followed by the Anniversary Discount Campaign and the Emigrant Campaign. Together, these initiatives are designed to encourage family travel, strengthen ties between communities, and invite passengers to discover or revisit destinations served by the two airlines.
The celebrations will also be extended on board. On 21 August, the SATA Group airlines will mark the occasion by offering chocolates to passengers travelling on flights departing from and arriving in the Azores, as a symbolic gesture of appreciation and celebration shared with everyone travelling on that day. The initiative reflects the courtesy, hospitality and spirit of closeness that are hallmarks of the Azores destination.
Alongside the commercial initiatives and onboard activities, the SATA Group will also bring its history closer to the community through the installation of exhibition displays at airports across the Autonomous Region of the Azores and in the centre of Ponta Delgada, the birthplace of the SATA Group and the city where it continues to maintain its headquarters.
The celebration of SATA’s 85th anniversary provides another opportunity to pay tribute to all those who, over successive generations, have contributed to building a legacy defined by public service, ambition, resilience and an enduring connection to the Azores.
Today, just as in 1941, the SATA Group remains committed to its mission: serving the Azores, connecting its islands, bringing communities closer together, and continuing to carry the name of the archipelago further afield.
