Pleasant Flight

What information are you looking for?

At SATA Azores Airlines, we wish to welcome you on board with the same friendliness and hospitality that you will find on each of the islands of the Azores archipelago, and we will do everything possible to provide you with a pleasant, comfortable, and peaceful flight.

We know that to ensure the best possible travel experience, it’s essential to prepare several details in advance, so we leave you with some tips and information that can help you prepare for your flight.

Tips for a pleasant flight

Clothing and footwear

During the flight, wear comfortable clothing, preferably made of natural fibers, which are not too tight or difficult your natural movement. Also bring a comfortable jacket, so you can easily adapt to the cabin temperature. Shoes should be comfortable, preferably closed, and low-heeled. Sneakers are a good option.
If you can, avoid wearing a lot of jewelry and accessories that could cause you some discomfort if you want to get some sleep during your flight.

Food and beverage before your flight

Before traveling, we recommend that you avoid consuming salty, spicy, or fried foods, coffee, alcoholic beverages, or soft drinks, which can make you feel thirstier during the flight and can cause some discomfort.
For a more peaceful and comfortable flight, choose light and easily digestible foods such as fruit, nuts, and crackers. We also recommend that you increase your water intake to maintain a good level of hydration.

Diving

Scuba divers should not dive for a period that can go from 12 to 48 hours before the flight, due to the risk of decompression sickness.
The waiting time between submerging and traveling by plane depends on factors such as type, number, and depth of submersion.
Thus, the longer the time between submersion and flight, the higher level of safety there will be.

Sleep and change of schedule

Try to sleep well before your flight. If you are traveling to places with a time difference of five hours or more, we suggest that, a few days before your flight, you start to change your schedules progressively to reduce the impact of the time difference on your destination.

Traveling with babies and small children

We wish to offer a peaceful and comfortable travel experience to the little ones who fly with us. In this regard, passengers traveling with children have priority boarding and, on some of our airplanes, a crib is available for babies. This service must be requested at least 24 hours in advance and is subject to further confirmation.
We also offer special meals for children and babies, which can be requested when booking your flight.

Passengers with health problems

Passengers with limited mobility, specific needs, unstable breathing, or heart problems, with recent bleeding episodes or abdominal surgery, must require a medical authorization to travel. Medical contraindications depend on type of condition, aircraft, medical equipment, and trained healthcare assistant. Please, don't forget to include your usual medicines in your hand luggage. Check our Safety Measures for transporting liquids here.

Aircraft cabin environment

The environment inside the airplane is different from the environment we experience on the ground, which requires some attention if you have health problems.
As altitude increases, cabin air pressure decreases and the amount of oxygen in the blood tends to decrease. This is not a problem for most people, but if you have breathing problems (such as chronic bronchitis or any obstructive pulmonary disease) you may need to book an oxygen supplement in advance to avoid decompensation.
Gases inside the body tend to expand, which can cause pain and a popping or crackling sound in the ears. It happens more often on landing than on take-off, but it can happen in both cases. Please check: Preparing for descent.
Cabin air is also relatively dry which can cause a feeling of dryness in the mouth, nose and eyes, effects that can be prevented with a moisturizing lipstick and skin lotion, as well as moisturizing eye drops.

During the flight

Drink liquids, preferably water, and avoid alcoholic and soft drinks.
Try to avoid sitting with your legs crossed and get up from time to time to walk around unless the crew doesn't recommend it.
Your carry-on baggage should be properly stored. Crew movement in the cabin, as well as your own, should not be compromised.
Keep your seat belt fastened whenever you are seated, as you may enter a turbulent area unexpectedly.
Pay attention to the instructions on the onboard safety film, to all instructions from the crew and, to complement the information, check the safety card available on board.

Preparing for descent

When the plane starts to descend, there is a variation in the pressure inside the cabin, which can cause pain in the ears and, in extreme cases, otitis or trauma to the eardrum. To prevent this, apply nasal decongestant drops about 15 minutes before starting the descent, especially if you have a cold. It is also advisable to make large chewing movements or chewing a gum. If you are traveling with small children, offer them a pacifier or a bottle.
Passengers must not land while asleep.

Upon arrival

Physiological disturbances (jet lag) such as sleep disturbances, digestive problems, difficulty concentrating, and fatigue can arise if you cross multiple time zones. Try to adapt to the schedule of the destination country, having meals and sleeping periods according to the local time, and doing some physical exercise. If your stay is short-term, choose to keep the schedule of the country of origin.
